KLCI pares losses in volatile trade

KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 16): The FBM KLCI pared losses in volatile trade, as higher crude oil prices supported sentiment.

The KLCI had tracked Asian market losses, as investors reacted to Switzerland's move to end its currency cap.

At the 5pm closing bell, Malaysia's KLCI fell 1.43 points or 0.08% to 1,743.57 points. The index had earlier fallen to an intraday low of 1,732.35 points.

Areca Capital CEO Danny Wong told theedgemarkets.com that "the marginally higher crude oil prices have provided short-term support to the KLCI."

“The weaker ringgit may see fund inflows into equities and fixed income assets, as investors begin to see Malaysian market as attractive,” Wong said over telephone.

US and Brent crude oil prices rose 1.04% and 0.81% to US$46.73 and US$48.66 a barrel, respectively.

The ringgit was traded at RM3.56 to the US dollar, and 2.8676 versus the Singapore dollar.

Across Bursa Malaysia, 1.78 billion shares worth RM1.88 billion were traded. Market losers led gainers by 426 versus 366, while 296 counters were unchanged.

The top gainer was Dutch Lady Milk Industries Bhd ( Financial Dashboard), while leading decliners includedCarlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd ( Financial Dashboard) and Petronas Gas Bhd ( Financial Dashboard).

The most-active counter was Minetech Resources Bhd ( Financial Dashboard).

Across Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 1.43%, while South Korea’s Kospi declined 1.36%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed 1.02% lower.

Asian shares stumbled on Friday and the dollar skidded against the safe-haven yen, after Switzerland's unexpected move to abandon its currency cap, jolted markets already roiled by plunging commodities prices, according to Reuters.

Ronaldo hopes to hold off Messi, Neuer to retain Ballon d'Or

ZURICH: Cristiano Ronaldo is the favourite to win the Ballon d'Or for the second year in succession at Monday's gala ceremony in Zurich ahead of Manuel Neuer and Lionel Messi.

Messi has finished in the top two in each of the last seven years but, despite another prolific year in 2014, appears this time to be lagging behind his two rivals.

A disappointing World Cup, in which he was eliminated at the group stage with Portugal, has not prevented Ronaldo from staking a strong claim to win the prize for the third time overall.

The 29-year-old Real Madrid superstar scored a remarkable 61 goals in the calendar year as he helped his club win the Champions League, Copa del Rey and UEFA Super Cup before ending 2014 by securing the Club World Cup.

Ronaldo scored a record 17 goals in last season's Champions League and has already netted a phenomenal 26 goals in 16 La Liga games this season.

Unsurprisingly, he has received fierce support from his club, who feel that Ronaldo would be the only worthy winner of the prize and felt compelled to publicly criticise UEFA president Michel Platini for his suggestions that Neuer should take the award.

Platini said in November that a German should win the award following their World Cup triumph, telling press: "I already said it four years ago. A Spaniard should have won it then because Spain had won the World Cup (in 2010). This year it is Germany."

In response, Madrid expressed "surprise at (Platini's) repeated remarks regarding his personal preferences for who should win the Ballon d'Or", and added that Ronaldo was "deserving more than ever of winning the Ballon d'Or."

However, Neuer -- the only one of six German World Cup winners on the initial shortlist to make the final three -- makes a good case to become the first goalkeeper to take the prize since Lev Yashin of the Soviet Union in 1963, and the first German since Lothar Matthaeus in 1990, the year West Germany lifted the World Cup in Italy.

After helping Pep Guardiola's Bayern win a domestic double in Germany, Neuer, 28, was outstanding in his country's run to World Cup glory, as they beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at the Maracana.

Diego Maradona and 2004 winner Andriy Shevchenko have given Neuer their backing, while Germany coach Joachim Loew told Bild: "Any other choice than Neuer will disappoint me."

However, Neuer himself is remaining cautious after seeing his widely-tipped club colleague Franck Ribery come away disappointed at last year's ceremony.

"I'm certainly not favourite," Neuer told German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung. "The other two are international brands, they've clearly got an advantage."

Despite his fame, and the fact that he scored 58 goals in 66 games for club and country in 2014, Messi's candidature is not helped by the fact that he failed to win a trophy with Barcelona.

And while he captained Argentina to the World Cup final, the 27-year-old failed to perform to his usual sky-high standards in the knockout stage in Brazil, even if he came away with the Golden Ball award for the tournament's best player.

Youth Parliament wants BR1M payment changed to unit trust

KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Malaysian Youth Parliament today agreed in principle for the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) cash payments be changed to unit trusts.

Pahang representative Mohd Firdaus Abd Samad, when winding up debate on a motion for the government to do a detailed study on the income gap among the people, said this mechanism would be more effective to manage the government's cash flow.

"If BR1M is given in the form of unit trusts, there will be a maturity period, so in five years the government will no longer need to spend for BR1M, instead the dividends will take care of this," he said.

The motion, brought up by the assembly's Socio-economy Committee, received unanimous approval.

Today was the second day of the sitting of the first session of the Youth Parliament. The sitting at Parliament House was chaired by Speaker  Datuk Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, who is also the chairman of the National Higher Education Fund Corporation.

Among others, the motion also called for a special committee or body to be set up to find ways of narrowing the income gap.

Among others, the motion also called for a special committee or body to be set up to find ways of narrowing the income gap.

Terengganu representative Alif Rosli in giving his thumbs up for the motion also suggested that the government also look at sukuk as an alternative.

"It is also a suitable mechanism in the long term as compared to the cash payments which people will spend very quickly," he said.

Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur representative Suhail Mohamed Kamaruddin, however, felt that there was no need for a special comittee or body as was suggested.

"The Economic Planning Unit is already there which is supported by the Statistics Department. So the question is why does such a huge income gap still exist," he said.
